Traditionally recognized for her classic styles infused with vibrant colors that contrast with neutral palettes, Burch described her latest collection as a reinvention of sportswear. She aimed to transform conventional pieces by infusing them with unique elements and pairings.
“The concept revolves around both a literal and metaphorical interpretation of ‘twisting’. I’ve always appreciated that sportswear originated in America,” Burch remarked in an interview after the show. “My goal was to create something that invites the audience to take a longer look when they first see it. There’s a deeper layer of detail compared to the initial impression, whether it’s the luxurious materials used or the uniqueness of the cuts and drapes. It was an exploration of how to redefine these pieces to make them more appealing.”
The collection was notable for its rich layering, featuring sweaters draped over coats and button-downs subtly peeking out from beneath oversized blazers. Some of the extraordinary pieces included innovative track pants crafted from brushed wool and cotton, styled with blazers and sweaters.
Burch introduced several utilitarian short jackets equipped with multiple pockets, termed “handbag jackets.” These garments came in various fabrics, including black leather, denim, and a striking fire engine red option paired with a brown skirt. Other standout garments like jackets and button-downs featured exaggerated sleeves and cuffs, reminiscent of a father’s oversized sports jacket. A series of textured velvet and jersey dresses in subdued tones showcased draping, suitable for both formal and casual occasions.
For this show, Burch incorporated dramatic elements, selecting visually striking venues. She expressed her gratitude for presenting at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, a space she’s cherished throughout her life. “It feels incredible to showcase here. MoMA truly embodies the essence of New York,” she said.
The runway experience was unique, featuring two connected spaces linked by an expansive staircase, which models descended while showcasing the collection. Some attendees were seated on metallic benches atop a two-story platform, while others occupied a stark white area below, enhanced by large windows overlooking the street and a massive video screen displaying distorted views of the models and guests, evoking an unsettling yet captivating atmosphere.
The immersive experience was further heightened by an eerie, techno-infused soundtrack that began with a heavy beat. Instead of lyrics, listeners could hear a woman’s laughter that oscillated between giggling and an unsettling quality. “It’s definitely a bit twisted,” Burch noted playfully. “You could never tell if she was laughing or crying.”
Among the audience were several celebrities, including Amanda Seyfried, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Alexandra Daddario, sharing seats with singer-songwriter Ciara and media personality Martha Stewart.
Myha’la, a star from the series “Industry,” commented on the collection, stating, “It radiated female strength, which I find incredibly appealing.” Singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence expressed her admiration for the intricate details, stating, “A designer’s love for women is palpable, and Tory clearly knows how to dress us elegantly, projecting a blueprint for embracing strength and confidence.”
