DALLAS — Anthony Davis will be sidelined for at least the duration of the All-Star break following a groin injury incurred in his first game with the Dallas Mavericks. This comes on the heels of a major trade that saw Luka Doncic move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
In light of Davis’s injury, Kyrie Irving, one of the team’s new additions, has stepped in to take his place on the All-Star roster. The All-Star festivities will kick off on Friday in San Francisco, culminating in the main event scheduled for Sunday night.
Reports from various media outlets indicate that Davis may be out for several weeks due to a left adductor strain, with NBA insider Marc Stein first breaking the news regarding the potential length of his absence. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd stated before Monday’s game against Sacramento that Davis’s injury is still under review, and a timeline for his return is yet to be determined.
After Monday, the Mavericks are set to play home games against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday and the Miami Heat on Thursday before the All-Star break.
Davis, a ten-time All-Star, had a remarkable first half in the Mavericks’ 116-105 victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday, recording 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks. However, late in the third quarter, he experienced discomfort, which prompted him to leave the game early.
The absence of Davis for an extended period will likely increase scrutiny on Dallas general manager Nico Harrison regarding the contentious trade that resulted in losing a fan-favorite player like Doncic. Many Mavericks supporters are expressing their dissatisfaction with Harrison’s decision to trade away a 25-year-old superstar in his prime for a player who has a history of injuries.
While the 31-year-old Davis managed to play a career-high 76 games last season with the Lakers, he has missed at least 20 games in each of the prior five seasons. His last games with the Lakers were limited due to an abdominal strain, which also kept him from participating in the initial games he could have played for the Mavericks.
In his debut for the Dallas team, Davis expressed optimism about the injury, mentioning that he believed it wasn’t serious. He also indicated that part of the reason he opted to leave the game when he felt tightness was related to his prior abdominal issue.
