Two American tourists suffered injuries after a terrifying shark attack while swimming at a popular resort in the Bahamas.
The incident occurred on Friday evening off the shores of Bimini Bay, with one victim reportedly sustaining serious injuries.
Authorities said the two women were quickly airlifted to New Providence for urgent medical care. Local police have since launched an investigation into the attack.
Investigation Underway
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, initial reports confirm that the victims were U.S. residents. “One of the victim’s injuries is listed as serious. Investigations are ongoing,” police stated. However, no updates have been provided on the victims’ recovery status.
Shark Attacks on the Rise
The Bahamas has seen numerous shark attacks over the years, with global statistics showing an increase in incidents. In 2022, swimmers and waders accounted for 43 percent of all recorded shark attacks, while paddleboarders and surfers made up 35 percent. Last year alone, there were 69 reported unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, with 14 proving fatal.
The U.S. led in shark attack cases, recording 36 incidents.
Tragic Reminder of Past Attacks
This latest attack comes just months after a fatal shark encounter in the Bahamas. In December 2023, 44-year-old Boston native Lauren Erickson Van Wart was killed while paddleboarding off New Providence Island. She was less than a mile from shore when a shark fatally mauled her. Despite rescue efforts from a lifeguard, she succumbed to severe injuries on the right side of her body.
Van Wart, a newlywed and math editor, was remembered by colleagues for her dedication to education. “Her commitment to excellence and outstanding work was driven by a higher purpose,” Curriculum Associates CEO Rob Waldron said at the time.
Why Shark Attacks Are Common in the Bahamas
Experts say the Bahamas’ thriving tourism industry and shark-related activities contribute to the increasing number of attacks. Gavin Naylor, program director of the International Shark Attack File, explained that frequent shark-feeding excursions have led to sharks becoming less cautious around humans.
“There are a lot of people in the water, and the sharks get acclimated,” Naylor noted. The Bahamas is home to 30 to 40 shark species, including the Caribbean reef shark, bull shark, tiger shark, and blacktip shark—species known for frequent interactions with humans.
While shark attacks remain rare, experts warn that accidental bites often occur when sharks mistake humans for prey. On average, five fatal shark attacks are reported worldwide each year, with most occurring in Australia.
