NEW ORLEANS — Arik Armstead, a defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was honored as the Walter Payton Man of the Year on Thursday evening. This recognition highlights his endeavors through the Armstead Academic Project, which focuses on promoting early childhood education.

Armstead has been open about his personal struggles with reading during his childhood, which contributed to feelings of self-consciousness. His commitment to education drives him to frequently visit schools and read to children, aiming to ensure that kids from various socio-economic backgrounds receive the educational resources they need.

“This is a tremendous honor,” expressed Armstead during his acceptance speech. “It brings with it a deep sense of responsibility to continue serving others—and to reach even more individuals in need.”

He acknowledged the pivotal role his parents played in shaping his character by nurturing a spirit of service within him. “Your guidance is the primary reason for my achievements today,” he said, expressing hope that he makes his parents proud.

In concluding his speech at the Saenger Theater and to those viewing from home, Armstead shared a heartfelt message about unity. “We exist in a society that is often divided,” he noted. “Yet, I firmly believe in the goodness of humanity. We share more commonalities than differences, and each of us possesses the ability to initiate positive change in our communities.”

Armstead challenged his audience, saying, “I urge you to seek opportunities to brighten someone else’s life and witness how that act transforms your own.”
