The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has just released the full, unedited transcript and video from CBS News’ controversial “60 Minutes” interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The release comes after President Donald Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the network, claiming election interference.

Editing discrepancies exposed

The transcript shows discrepancies between what CBS aired and what was said in the original interview. A key moment in the interview raised eyebrows when CBS aired only the second half of Harris’ response to a question about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s perceived disregard for the Biden administration. In the preview clip aired on Face the Nation, correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Harris, “Why does it seem Netanyahu isn’t listening to the U.S.?”

Harris’ full response highlighted that the U.S. had been working with Israel to influence regional actions, but CBS only aired a truncated version in the primetime special. “The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel,” Harris said, adding the U.S. would continue its advocacy.

CBS defends it’s editing

CBS defended the edits, arguing that the broadcast adhered to journalistic standards. The network explained that editing interviews for time and clarity is standard practice. “We edited the interview to ensure we included as much of the vice president’s answers as possible while staying within broadcast constraints,” CBS stated. However, it’s important to note that the preview clip on Face the Nation included content not seen in the 60 Minutes special.

Backlash over Harris’ ‘word salad’ answer

The full transcript release has fueled criticism, with many accusing CBS of misleading the public by omitting parts of Harris’ response. Harris’ answer to Whitaker’s question was mocked by conservatives as a “word salad,” a term used to describe vague or overly complex language. In the primetime broadcast, the network aired a much more focused and concise portion of her answer, drawing accusations that CBS was attempting to protect Harris from backlash.

Trump’s lawsuit and FCC investigation

This controversy erupted amid the ongoing legal battle with President Trump. The FCC, led by Trump-appointed chair Brendan Carr, ordered CBS to release the raw footage as part of its investigation into whether the network violated its “news distortion” policy. According to Carr, CBS’ editing raised concerns because it appeared to alter the meaning of Harris’ words. “You can edit for time or clarity, but you can’t change what someone said to make it look like something else,” Carr stated.

CBS resists transparency, then releases full transcript

In response to the FCC’s order, CBS initially resisted releasing the raw transcript. The network was under pressure, especially after critics began calling for full transparency. Trump’s lawsuit, filed in October, accused CBS News of election interference, alleging the network edited Harris’ comments to shield her from criticism and, in doing so, helped her Democratic campaign just days before the election.

Lawsuit claims deceptive editing

The lawsuit argues that CBS’ actions were “deceptive” and intended to manipulate voters. “CBS used its platform on 60 Minutes to cross the line from responsible journalism to deceitful manipulation of news,” Trump’s legal team claimed. The lawsuit further asserts that CBS edited Harris’ answer in an attempt to favor the Democratic Party in the midst of a fiercely contested election.

Paramount global’s possible settlement

The legal battle continues to loom large, with CBS now facing the possibility of a major legal and financial reckoning. Reports suggest that CBS parent company Paramount Global may be looking to settle the lawsuit, especially as it prepares for a high-profile merger with Skydance Media. Some within the company, including Shari Redstone, are said to support settling the case to avoid complications with Trump’s FCC.

The role of media in election coverage

The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions in media coverage during the 2024 election cycle. With the country divided, the role of the press has come under intense scrutiny. Critics argue that CBS’ selective editing of Harris’ interview could have significant implications for how voters view the candidates in the upcoming election.

The FCC’s release and the media ethics debate

The FCC’s release of the raw interview transcript is expected to be a game-changer in the ongoing debate over media ethics and election coverage. As more details emerge, it’s clear that CBS News will continue to face scrutiny over its handling of the interview, with both supporters and detractors weighing in on the matter. The question remains: did CBS act in good faith, or did it cross a line in its pursuit of ratings and political favor? Only time will tell.
