Tiger Woods has announced the death of his mother, Kultida, at the age of 78.
The golf legend shared the news in an emotional statement, describing her as his biggest supporter and an unwavering presence throughout his life.
A Deep Bond Between Mother and Son
Woods was extremely close to his mother, who played a significant role in his rise to dominance in the sport. She was by his side through both his greatest triumphs and his most challenging moments, including the public fallout from his 2009 scandal.
In his statement, Woods expressed gratitude for her love and influence, saying she was a force of nature and the foundation of his success. He also noted how deeply she was loved by her grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.
A Life Dedicated to Supporting Her Son
Kultida was a constant figure in Woods’ life and career, frequently attending tournaments and major events. She was present when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 and stood by him as he rebuilt his reputation following personal struggles.
Last June, during an acceptance speech for the Bob Jones Award, Woods paid tribute to his mother, acknowledging her sacrifices and unwavering belief in him. He credited her with allowing him to chase his dreams, calling her the strongest support any child could ask for.
A Tough Love Approach in Difficult Times
Woods has previously spoken about his mother’s strong influence, particularly in holding him accountable during the most difficult periods of his life. When he publicly apologized for his personal mistakes in 2010, Kultida was among the few people present, making sure he faced the consequences of his actions.
He described both her and his ex-wife Elin Nordegren as being brutally honest with him in the aftermath of his scandal, reinforcing the values he had strayed from. He later admitted that he had lost touch with the discipline and principles instilled in him by his parents.
Tributes Pour In
Former President Donald Trump offered his condolences, praising Kultida for being a guiding force in Woods’ life. He recalled her influence on her son’s strength and success, sending prayers to the family.
Woods’ father, Earl, passed away in 2006 after battling cancer. The two met in the 1960s at a U.S. Army base in Bangkok, where their journey as a family began.
Woods has asked for privacy during this difficult time as he mourns the loss of the woman who played such a central role in shaping his life and career.
