BBC expresses regret to employees who felt hindered in voicing issues regarding comedian Russell Brand.

LONDON — The BBC has expressed regret to its employees who felt hindered from reporting the inappropriate behavior of actor and comedian Russell Brand due to his high profile. An internal assessment revealed that various concerns regarding Brand’s actions were not adequately addressed.

Peter Johnston, the BBC’s director of editorial complaints, led the investigation and discovered eight separate complaints regarding Brand, which included serious allegations such as sexual activity occurring on BBC premises and instances of him exposing himself within the studio. However, Johnston’s report indicated that only one of these complaints was formally submitted to the management at that time.

In a report made public on Thursday, Johnston conveyed his appreciation to those who came forward for discussions during the review. He extended an apology on behalf of the BBC to those directly impacted by the findings. He acknowledged that the prevailing culture during that period likely shaped what behaviors were considered acceptable or tolerated. Despite this, he noted that numerous individuals were concerned about Brand’s conduct but felt they couldn’t voice their worries then.

The investigation was prompted by media reports detailing allegations from four women who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Brand between 2006 and 2013, during the peak of his career. Brand hosted two weekly radio shows at the BBC from 2006 to 2008, alongside various short-term projects with the organization.

Now 49 years old, Brand has shifted his focus to creating podcasts and YouTube content, which have faced backlash for promoting misinformation and conspiracy theories. He has categorically denied allegations of rape, assault, and emotional abuse, asserting that all his sexual encounters were always consensual.

Johnston revealed that he reached out to Brand to invite him to share his viewpoint during the investigation, but Brand opted not to engage.

The BBC acknowledged the issues within its historical practices, admitting that presenters have previously misused their influence. However, the organization highlighted that procedural changes have been implemented since Brand’s departure, including the establishment of a dedicated protocol for managing severe allegations and the introduction of an anti-bullying and harassment policy.
