In ‘2000 Meters to Andriivka,’ Academy Award-winning filmmaker transports audiences to the war zones of Ukraine

PARK CITY, Utah — The day Mstyslav Chernov received the BAFTA for his documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” he also learned of the deaths of two soldiers he knew, who were significant figures in his latest project, “2000 Meters to Andriivka.” This new film presents a gripping view of contemporary warfare, immersing viewers in the realities of the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive.

“The film evolved over time,” remarked Chernov, a videojournalist affiliated with The Associated Press, following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. “Initially, it was meant to showcase the success of the operation, but it transformed into a narrative about loss, memories, and the heavy toll soldiers pay for every inch of land. That is reflected in the film’s title.”

Returning to Park City, Utah, with a fresh film is a poignant experience for Chernov. Two years ago, he debuted “20 Days in Mariupol” at the same festival. His work has garnered significant accolades, including a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar. However, he continues to grapple with reporting on an ongoing war in his homeland, a conflict that shows no signs of abating.

Chernov recently shared insights regarding “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” which was co-produced by AP and PBS Frontline. He discussed the stark contrasts between the film’s release and his experiences on the frontlines, as well as his sense of duty toward Ukraine. The following remarks have been condensed and clarified.

Question: Two years ago at Sundance, you expressed eagerness to return to Ukraine. Was creating a film about soldiers already on your mind?

Chernnov: After leaving Mariupol, I reflected deeply on whether to continue my work. We experienced immense trauma, loss, and a sense of guilt for not doing enough. Yet, that personal tragedy and the stories of the people I filmed made it impossible to simply step away. The desire to do more never dissipated.

Throughout this journey, I was concurrently editing “20 Days in Mariupol,” which gained international recognition. The positive responses drove me to return, as I realized the situation had not significantly changed, so I felt compelled to continue filming.

During the summer of 2023, as Ukraine launched a vital counteroffensive, “20 Days in Mariupol” was also released theatrically. While promoting the film in Los Angeles, I would fly back to Poland afterward and head to the frontline to begin shooting this new project.

The story of Andriivka captivated me, prompting repeated visits to follow the platoon. Sadly, as time went on, many individuals we initially filmed on the road to Andriivka lost their lives.

Question: Your experience filming “20 Days in Mariupol” had you instinctively knowing when to capture moments. In this project, you approached it with a clear intention. How did that alter your filmmaking process?

Chernnov: The impact of “20 Days in Mariupol” and its widespread audience made me realize how documentary filmmaking could enhance journalism. I sought a balance between these two approaches to maximize their effectiveness.

The documentary format offers a more lasting impression than typical news reporting. Given the overwhelming number of significant stories occurring worldwide, it takes extraordinary effort to maintain interest in a given narrative, especially one that resonates personally. The tale of Andriivka and the soldiers’ struggles hold great personal significance.

Question: This film provides an immersive frontline experience, akin to fictional war narratives. How did you achieve this?

Chernnov: The evolution of technology and changing audience dynamics demand that documentary filmmaking adapt. We constantly seek novel storytelling methods and visual representations. Our approach to “2000 Meters to Andriivka” was experimental, aiming to depict modern combat in a unique manner. While it retains classic documentary elements, I aimed for an immersive experience where the audience would lose themselves in the narrative, only to realize at the film’s conclusion that everything depicted was real. That realization has a profound impact.

Question: Your Oscar speech is memorable. During that moment, was Andriivka on your mind?

Chernnov: Yes, they were in my thoughts. I was acutely aware of the ongoing events while standing on that stage filled with stars. I received countless messages before the ceremony, urging me to convey something meaningful. I felt an immense sense of responsibility to represent 40 million Ukrainians, to highlight the situation in Mariupol, and to honor the soldiers I had been documenting for nearly a year.

Question: What does this film mean for your friends and the people of Ukraine?

Chernnov: Since the premiere, many have reached out, expressing how crucial it is to have a film that captures the frontline perspective of soldiers at this moment. Interest in such narratives has waned, and the extreme dangers faced by journalists when reporting on the frontline make it increasingly challenging. People are grateful for this portrayal, which reminds the world that Ukraine involves real individuals and not just political rhetoric or statistics. It’s essential to remember the humanity behind the headlines.
