Urgent weather warning: devastating Santa Ana Winds back in SoCal

Southern California is in a state of high alert. The National Weather Service has issued its most urgent fire warning as destructive Santa Ana winds are set to hit the region. Gusts could reach up to 100 mph. This means extreme fire danger is just around the corner.

A terrifying reminder of wildfire season

These powerful winds are expected to whip through the region on Monday. They are a terrifying reminder of the ongoing wildfire season. The FOX Forecast Center is sounding the alarm about widespread and uncontrollable fires.

Recent devastation: Palisades and Eaton Fires

This comes on the heels of the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have already destroyed over 14,000 structures. The damage is staggering, making this one of the most expensive disasters in U.S. history. The Palisades Fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is 56% contained. The Eaton Fire has burned 14,000 acres and is 81% contained.

Winds and fire threat: a dangerous combination

FOX Weather Meteorologist Craig Herrera is concerned. “With Santa Ana winds back in the forecast, that is a huge concern,” he said. He explained that the return of winds means embers could jump fire lines, making containment even more challenging.

“Particularly dangerous situation” fire warning

The National Weather Service has issued a “Particularly Dangerous Situation” Fire Weather Warning. This warning applies to large areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It will be in effect from Monday afternoon until Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.

Take action now to prepare your home and loved ones for another round of extreme wind and fire weather,” the agency urged in a statement on X.

Weather shifts: the impact of the jet stream

Southern California’s weather is shifting dramatically. After a calmer weekend, a sharp dip in the jet stream is heading toward the region. This will bring cold air and powerful winds. As the jet stream moves, winds will intensify, moving from the northeast and picking up speed.

The winds will start strong on Monday morning, gaining strength as they move from the mountains toward the coast. By the evening, gusts will reach up to 65 mph in the valleys and up to 100 mph in the highest elevations. These winds are typical of Santa Ana conditions.

The San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys will experience the most significant wind threat. The winds will peak Monday night and continue into Tuesday morning.

Active fires at high risk for rapid spread

This is an especially dangerous situation for those living near active wildfires. “This is where we have the fires burning,” Herrera said. He added that critical fire weather conditions are extending all the way down into San Diego County. In addition, elevated fire conditions are reaching the high deserts.

Life-threatening fire conditions ahead

The combination of strong winds and extremely low humidity will create life-threatening fire conditions. Fire behavior will be rapid and extreme. The risk of new fires starting is high, and existing fires could spread out of control.

This is a situation we must monitor closely,” Herrera warned. “Please do everything you can to avoid any kind of flame or fire, and be ready to evacuate if necessary.

Investigation into the cause of fires

The fires that started on January 7 have already caused significant destruction, but investigators are still uncertain about the cause. There was no lightning in the area when the fires began, which leads authorities to focus on the possibility of human involvement.

A congressional report has highlighted a disturbing trend. Between 2018 and 2022, 89% of U.S. wildfires were human-caused. Common ignition sources include debris burns, utility equipment, and acts of arson.

As Santa Ana winds roar back into the forecast, Southern California is on high alert. The region is bracing for more destruction as the weather sets the stage for more wildfires. Stay prepared, stay safe, and heed all warnings. The danger is very real.
