Kristi Noem, designated by Trump for homeland security, is under examination over her immigration strategies.

WASHINGTON — South Dakota’s Governor Kristi Noem, selected by Donald Trump to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is set to appear before senators on Friday for a confirmation hearing. This opportunity allows her to present her vision for the extensive responsibilities of the DHS, a critical agency in Trump’s strategy to combat illegal immigration.

As a seasoned politician with two terms as governor and past experience in the U.S. Congress, Noem was appointed to manage the department, which plays a significant role in immigration enforcement and border control—two issues central to Trump’s agenda focused on mass deportations and stricter border policies.

If confirmed, Noem will oversee vital agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Citizenship and Immigration Services. Additionally, the DHS is tasked with securing transportation networks, safeguarding high-profile officials, managing disaster responses, and much more.

Noem will replace Alejandro Mayorkas, the previous DHS Secretary who was heavily criticized by Republicans due to the surge of migrants at the southern border and faced impeachment in early 2024.

This role comes with high expectations as the DHS secretary position saw six different individuals during Trump’s first term, indicating the intense pressure associated with the job.

Currently, Noem seems to have robust support from GOP senators, which will be crucial for her confirmation process. Senator Rand Paul, the Republican chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee where Noem will testify, expressed an expectation for an uncomplicated hearing.

Paul stated he was unaware of any substantial grievances from the Democratic side regarding Noem, suggesting there might even be some bipartisan support. Nevertheless, Democratic senators are prepared to scrutinize her qualifications for leading such an essential department for national security.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut on the committee, expressed “serious doubts” regarding Noem’s capacity to manage an organization of significant national importance.

In recent years, Noem has established a strong presence within Trump’s circles and was once considered a potential vice presidential candidate. Her close work with Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, began after her governorship, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, she gained attention among conservatives for opposing extensive health regulations.

Noem has consistently voiced Trump’s hardline stance on immigration. In her recent State of the State address, she described the situation at the southern border as an “invasion,” claiming that the security measures had been intentionally overlooked and laws inadequately enforced over the past four years.

In a show of alignment with other Republican governors, she participated in sending troops to Texas for Operation Lone Star, aimed at deterring migrants. This action drew criticism due to the financial backing, which included a $1 million contribution from a Tennessee billionaire known for supporting Republican causes.
