A shocking tragedy unfolded in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Heather Williams, a 25-year-old woman with cognitive impairments, disappeared last week. Her family and community are now grieving her untimely death.
Last seen on doorbell camera
Williams was last seen alive on January 4, around 10 p.m. A Ring doorbell camera captured her leaving her family’s home and getting into a light-colored sedan with a sunroof. The footage was chilling. She didn’t know the driver, her sister Mary later confirmed. Police suspect she may have met the individual online.
Police launch investigation
The Fayetteville Police Department quickly launched a missing persons investigation. They issued an endangered person alert on January 7, emphasizing her cognitive challenges. Williams had limited speech and restricted use of her right leg and arm due to a 2015 car accident.
Tragic discovery
Despite the alert and widespread search efforts, tragedy struck. Police discovered her body in a wooded area on Friday, just five miles from her home. Officers made the grim find around 5 p.m.
Family’s heartbreak
Her family shared their heartbreak publicly. “It is with a heavy and broken heart that our family confirms the horrific news,” her sister Mary Williams wrote on Facebook. “I pray whoever is responsible for this is held accountable and there is justice for Heather.”
Mary described her sister as trusting and naive, unaware of the dangers around her. “What happened to Heather is awful … I wouldn’t want it to happen to anybody else. The thought of that person still out there, able to harm others, is horrific.”
Suspect’s vehicle found
On the same day police found Heather’s body, they also located the suspect’s vehicle. Investigators say they have leads but haven’t identified a suspect yet. They’re urging anyone with information to come forward. Mary Williams also made a heartfelt plea to the public. “Somebody knows something. Somebody’s talked. Somebody’s slipped up. Please, if you hear anything, say something.”
Through the pain, Mary reflected on Heather’s unwavering faith. “She loved God. Through all her trials, she never lost her faith. I thank God for the years we had with her.”
