ROTHBURY, Mich. — The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a man from the Detroit area during a 2018 music festival has come to a conclusion with the recent finding of human remains in northern Michigan, according to a statement from law enforcement officials on Thursday.
The remains were discovered by hunters this week close to the location of the annual Electric Forest Festival and have been confirmed to belong to Kevin Graves, as reported by state police.
While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, authorities indicated that there were no signs suggesting foul play. “At least the family has some closure on where he is, and hopefully, the next steps will shed light on what happened,” stated Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
Graves, who was 28 at the time of his disappearance, was last seen at the Electric Forest Festival in 2018. Reports indicated that after a disagreement with a girlfriend, he mentioned he was going back to his tent but never returned. Investigators conducted extensive searches using dogs and enlisted the help of many volunteers, while divers investigated local lakes. In 2023, a billboard featuring Graves’ photograph encouraged attendees of the festival to provide any information to the authorities.
The remains were located in Oceana County; however, his missing person report was filed in Oakland County, where Graves resided. On Monday, shortly after the remains were found, Graves’ father, Gary Graves, received a visit from police at his home.
In an interview, the elder Graves expressed his frustration, stating, “With all the dogs and resources they claim to have had in the area, I’m struggling to understand how we missed this.” He mentioned that he would reserve judgment until he received definitive information about the exact location of the discovery.
