Jason Carter Reflects on Grandfather’s Legacy and final Days

Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, is opening up about the life and legacy of the former president. In an emotional interview on New Year’s Eve, Jason reflected on the nearly two years his grandfather spent in hospice care and how it became a time of deep reflection for the entire family.

Choosing Hospice Care

Back in February 2023, the world learned that Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, had chosen to spend his final days at home with family, opting for hospice care instead of further medical treatment. On December 29, 2024, The Carter Center announced his passing at the age of 100.

A Remarkable Legacy

“My grandfather was remarkable in so many ways,” Jason said. “We knew this day would come, but now that it’s here, it’s a powerful moment to reflect on his incredible legacy and look ahead to the future.”

A cherished Family Tradition

Jason shared a heartfelt memory of the New Year’s tradition his grandparents started decades ago. “For about 40 years, they hosted a Carter family trip every New Year’s,” he revealed. “It was one of their greatest gifts to us. And now, this week, the entire family is coming together again to celebrate his life and the remarkable legacy he left behind.”

Leading by Example

Jimmy Carter’s impact extended far beyond his presidency. Jason described him as a man enriched by his travels and experiences around the globe. “He led by example,” Jason said. “One thing he taught me about politics is that you can stay true to your principles and beliefs, even in a world full of political temptations. He proved that you don’t have to compromise who you are to make a difference.”

A Love that lasted a Lifetime

The love story between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter also left a lasting impression. Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023, was Jimmy’s partner for an incredible 77 years. “Their marriage was an incredible blessing,” Jason said. “There’s a lot of health and luck involved in a long life together, but there’s also faith, love, and excitement for each other that kept them going strong.”

Family and Legacy

Jimmy Carter is survived by his children Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Jason expressed gratitude for the time they shared and the lessons his grandfather imparted. “He was a rock for us,” Jason said. “But he also shared so much of himself with the world, and that’s what made him truly special.
