A string of drone sightings over New Jersey has left residents increasingly anxious, and Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali’s recent remarks have done little to calm nerves.
Instead, his claims about “sophisticated” drones allegedly hijacking a resident’s hobby drone have only fueled frustration and calls for evidence.
Mayor Ghassali took to Facebook to share a concerning story from December 15, where a resident reported their drone was “drone-jacked” while attempting to follow an unidentified drone. “These seem to be very sophisticated drones with counter-offensive systems,” he stated. However, instead of reassuring locals, the anecdote left many demanding proof and accusing the mayor of fearmongering.
Backlash Over Lack of Evidence
Residents were quick to challenge the mayor. “Can we provide this experiment on film with your drone?” one commenter asked. Another dismissed the claim as “third-hand rumors without proof,” while some accused Ghassali of escalating panic rather than offering solutions.’
Others demanded accountability, with one Facebook user urging, “How do we get this in front of Congress and state senators so they can get answers from the FBI?”
Emergency Declarations and Drone Ban
Days earlier, Mayor Ghassali announced a ban on drone flights over Montvale, citing mounting reports of suspicious activity. “The feds can’t control the airspace, and my phone didn’t stop with drone sightings,” he wrote, declaring a “no-fly zone” and advising residents against discharging weapons at drones.
This local action follows a broader surge in unexplained drone activity across New Jersey. Over 5,000 reports of unusual drone sightings have been filed with federal authorities in recent months, further fueling speculation and unease.
Drone Incursions Linked to Contraband Smuggling
Adding to the mystery, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst recently revealed that some drone sightings are tied to smuggling operations at FCI Fort Dix, a low-security federal prison within the base. According to base spokesperson Kitsana R. Dounglomchan, drones have been used to sneak contraband such as cell phones, supplements, and other prohibited items into the facility.
While airspace above the base is strictly restricted, smugglers have employed tactics like darkening onboard lights to evade detection. The base has since ramped up countermeasures and continues to work with local law enforcement to address the issue.
Residents Demand Answers
The combination of unexplained sightings, smuggling operations, and a lack of clear information has left New Jersey residents demanding answers. “We need to know what these drones are and who’s behind them,” one frustrated local insisted.
As sightings increase and tension grows, the call for transparency and federal action has become louder, with many looking to state and national leaders to address the escalating concerns.
