LONDON — In 2024, the ATP men’s tennis tour distributed $1.3 million among 26 players through a newly implemented financial initiative known as Baseline, which ensures minimum annual earnings for individuals ranked within the top 250 of the ATP standings.

The tour announced on Wednesday that participants were compensated across three distinct categories, although specific names were not disclosed. Out of the total, 17 players benefitted from minimum guarantees, which fill the gaps for those falling short of specific prize money criteria in singles play. Additionally, three players received injury protection support aimed at those facing limitations in their tournament participation due to health issues, and seven players gained assistance through newcomer investment, which offers financial aid to fresh entrants among the top 125 ranking.

Interestingly, one player qualified for both the minimum guarantee as well as the injury protection segments of the plan, which was unveiled in August 2023. This season marks the inaugural year of a three-year pilot program.

“Being a professional tennis player means you focus primarily on your performance. Yet, relying solely on results can be challenging, particularly when you face hurdles like injuries,” remarked Bernabé Zapata Miralles, a player who received a minimum guarantee to enhance his earnings this season. “This program provides us with the necessary assurance to focus on improving, alleviating the stress related to financial uncertainties.”

Under the Baseline plan, based on the year-end rankings from 2023 and earnings for 2024, the ATP supplemented the income of players who did not meet certain performance benchmarks. The support offered included $300,000 for players ranked in the top 100, $150,000 for those positioned from 101 to 175, and $75,000 for the 176 to 250 ranking range. These figures are set to increase next season to $200,000 for positions 101-175 and $100,000 for those in the 176-250 bracket.

For context, Jannik Sinner, the year-end No. 1, led the men’s tennis circuit with an impressive $16.9 million in prize earnings for 2024, while the No. 100 player, Federico Coria, earned approximately $590,000, and Abdullah Shelbayh, ranked No. 250, received just under $205,000 in singles payouts.

“We aim to provide players with the financial backing necessary to navigate challenges and forge sustainable careers,” stated ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi, who has a background as a former player.

Participation in this program requires players to register, and the ATP anticipates greater involvement in future years, hoping to exceed the participation of over 100 players that took part in 2024.
