The Pentagon has denied claims by New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew that the mystery drones sighted over the state and other areas are being launched from an Iranian “mothership” stationed off the U.S. East Coast. The assertion was made during an appearance on Fox News’ Faulkner Focus, where Van Drew cited “very qualified” and “reliable” sources suggesting the drones originated from an Iranian vessel.
Van Drew’s Allegations
Van Drew, a GOP lawmaker and member of the House Aviation Subcommittee, stated that the alleged Iranian mothership had been off the coast for about a month. He linked the claim to a supposed deal between Iran and China for drones and related technology, urging for the drones to be shot down regardless of their origin.
“These drones should be shot down,” Van Drew said. “Whether it was some crazy hobbyist… or whether it is Iran—and I think it very possibly could be—they should be shot down.”
Pentagon’s Response
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh refuted the claims, saying, “There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called ‘mothership’ launching drones toward the United States.” The military has not confirmed any connection between the drones and foreign adversaries.
Ongoing Investigations
The mysterious drones have sparked concern and curiosity among officials and residents in New Jersey and nearby states, with sightings of large, illuminated drones—some reportedly as big as SUVs—being reported nightly in some areas. Videos of these drones flying over homes and other locations have circulated widely.
The FBI is investigating the incidents and has encouraged the public to report drone sightings. Officials, including Democratic New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, have reassured the public that there is “no known threat” at this time, though the state is taking the situation “seriously.”
Public and Official Reactions
The mystery surrounding the drones continues to fuel speculation, with no concrete answers from federal agencies. While Van Drew’s claims have drawn attention, the lack of evidence supporting a foreign connection underscores the ongoing uncertainty around the drones’ origins and purpose.
