Angelina Jolie scores ninth Golden Globe nomination for role in Maria

Angelina Jolie has added another milestone to her illustrious career, earning her ninth Golden Globe nomination on Monday. The 49-year-old actress is up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her portrayal of legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the psychological drama Maria.

Tough Competition in a Star-Studded Category

Jolie faces stiff competition from Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Tilda Swinton (The Girl Next Door), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Kate Winslet (Lee). The winner will be announced at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on January 5, 2025.

A Career Full of Acclaim

Jolie’s previous Golden Globe nominations include roles in George WallaceGiaGirl, InterruptedA Mighty HeartChangelingThe TouristIn the Land of Blood and Honey, and First They Killed My Father. She won for the first three, cementing her status as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated talents.

Immersive Preparation for Her Role as Callas

To prepare for her role in Maria, Jolie dedicated seven months to opera and Italian language classes. Despite her extensive training, she admitted feeling “out of [her] mind” with nerves when it came time to sing. However, working with director Pablo Larrain helped her overcome her fears. “Pablo was kind and supportive, which gave me confidence to do my best,” she shared.

Jolie Reflects on Her Artistic Journey

In a recent interview, Jolie expressed gratitude for her career. “Being an artist is a real gift. I feel lucky to explore emotions and stories in a safe space, something many don’t have the chance to do,” she said. She also described how the challenges of portraying Callas, including singing, were a thrilling opportunity to grow.

Jolie’s nomination adds to the excitement of this year’s Golden Globes, which will also see standout contenders like Emilia Pérez leading the pack with 10 nods and notable films such as The Brutalist and Conclave vying for top honors.
