RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded when a 2-year-old boy was shot and killed after his 7-year-old brother came across a firearm in the glove compartment of the family’s truck in Southern California, as reported by local authorities.

On Monday, deputies were dispatched to a shopping center parking lot in Rancho Cucamonga, situated east of Los Angeles, following alerts about the shooting, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The young child was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, as stated in an official report from the sheriff’s office.

Investigations revealed that the victim was in the vehicle with his older brother, who found the loaded gun tucked away in the glovebox. At that moment, their mother was busy unloading items from the truck when the firearm discharged, striking the toddler in the head, explained sheriff’s spokesperson Mara Rodriguez during a briefing to local news outlets.

Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident and plan to compile a report that will be forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. This report will be reviewed for potential criminal implications, as officials assess the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
