St. John’s to pay tribute to former coach Lou Carnesecca during men’s and women’s games this weekend

In remembrance of legendary coach Lou Carnesecca, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at St. John’s will be donning “Lou” patches on their jerseys for the remainder of the season. Carnesecca, who passed away at the age of 99, had a profound impact on the university’s basketball program.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday morning at St. Thomas More Church on the university’s Queens campus. In addition, the athletic department is organizing “A Tribute to Coach Carnesecca” during this weekend’s games at the arena named in his honor. The Red Storm men’s team, currently led by coach Rick Pitino, is set to compete against Kansas State as part of the Big 12-Big East Battle on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women’s team will face off against Wake Forest on Sunday.

In a heartfelt gesture, Carnesecca’s cherished seat in Section 7, Row JJ, Seat 3, will remain unoccupied during these games to honor his memory. A video tribute dedicated to Carnesecca will be presented before the games commence, followed by a moment of silence within the arena. Additionally, a commemorative decal will be placed on the court, and St. John’s players will wear “526” shooting shirts to celebrate his impressive career win total.

The university is also planning to honor Carnesecca’s legacy through digital billboards located on the Long Island Expressway, Whitestone Expressway, and New Jersey Turnpike, ensuring that his contributions are recognized throughout the region.

As the most successful coach in the history of the men’s basketball program, Carnesecca recorded an impressive 526-200 record over 24 seasons at St. John’s, spanning from 1965 to 1992. Under his leadership, the team secured five Big East regular-season championships, made 18 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the Final Four in 1985.

In a fitting celebration, St. John’s will also host Lou Carnesecca Day on January 4 when the team takes on Butler, marking this special occasion just a day before what would have been his 100th birthday.
