DETROIT — General Motors has announced a recall expansion involving over 132,000 heavy-duty trucks in the United States due to issues with tailgate release switches that may short circuit, potentially causing the gates to open when the vehicles are in park.
This latest recall includes specific models of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks, adding to a previous recall from February that already affected 323,000 heavy-duty pickups. The trucks impacted are those equipped with both a manual gate and power lock and release feature.
According to reports shared with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, incidents have been documented where water intrusion into the electronic gate release switches leads to unintentional unlatched tailgates. Such occurrences pose a risk since cargo may spill onto roadways, creating safety hazards for other drivers.
The decision to include these additional trucks in the recall came after GM received 237 field reports indicating that tailgates were opening without warning. Until the necessary repairs are completed, the company advises owners to manually verify that their tailgate is securely closed and latched before driving their vehicles.
As part of the remedy, dealerships will replace the existing exterior touch pad switch assemblies with upgraded versions that offer better protection against water exposure.
Customers can expect to receive notification letters starting January 13, informing them of the necessary steps to have their vehicles serviced.
