Russian tourist’s final moments captured near Koh Samui’s Lad Ko Viewpoint

Kamilla Belyatskaya, a 24-year-old actress from Novosibirsk, Russia, tragically lost her life after being swept into the sea by a massive wave while exercising on her yoga mat at the scenic Lad Ko Viewpoint on Koh Samui, Thailand. Known for its panoramic views, the spot became the scene of heartbreak as strong monsoon conditions claimed the young woman’s life.

Final moments documented on social media

She was seen sitting on her yoga mat as the waves grew stronger and stronger

Shortly before the incident, Kamilla had filmed herself on a pink yoga mat, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. She described the location as her favorite place, calling Koh Samui her “home” and the “best place on earth.” Moments later, she was swept into the violent waters by an unexpected wave.

Attempted rescue efforts

A bystander reportedly jumped into the sea to try and save Kamilla but was unable to reach her. The mat she had been using was later seen floating in the turbulent waters. Local rescue teams arrived within 15 minutes but were unable to save her due to the powerful waves and challenging conditions.

Warnings ignored amid monsoon season

Thai authorities reminded visitors of the dangers posed by the monsoon season, urging caution in high-risk areas. Despite warning systems and red flags on beaches like Chaweng and Lamai, Kamilla had been exercising near rocky cliffs where waves surged unexpectedly.

Kamilla’s boyfriend and eyewitnesses have provided statements to local police. Efforts to locate both her and the bystander who attempted to save her are ongoing, coordinated by a newly established marine search and rescue center.

Thailand’s growing popularity among Russian tourists

The tragedy occurred as Thailand sees an influx of Russian tourists, with 1.48 million visiting in the last year, including those avoiding conscription into the war in Ukraine.

Chaiyaporn Subprasert, head of the Samui Rescue Centre, emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating: “This incident highlights the dangers of monsoon conditions. Visitors must exercise extreme caution near rocky coastal areas during periods of high waves.”
