For the second consecutive year, anti-Israel protesters attempted to disrupt the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, causing a temporary halt on Thursday. Police quickly intervened, making more than 20 arrests and restoring order within minutes.
The protesters entered the parade route at W. 55th Street and Sixth Avenue, stopping the Ronald McDonald balloon and sparking loud boos from frustrated spectators. Many parade-goers shouted at the group, urging them to move on.
“Don’t Celebrate Genocide!” Protesters Clash with Police
Photos and videos showed protesters sitting in the parade’s path, holding a large banner reading, “Don’t celebrate genocide!” The group chanted, “Free, free Palestine!” as NYPD officers swarmed in to detain them.
Some protesters resisted arrest, scuffling with officers as they were tackled to the ground and handcuffed. Others complied, walking away with police. Spectators erupted into chants of “USA! USA!” as the protesters were removed, allowing the parade to resume after about five minutes.
Swift Response from Authorities
Mayor Eric Adams had issued a strong warning ahead of the event, cautioning protesters not to repeat last year’s disruption, which included individuals gluing their hands to the parade route.
“I really want to take a moment to tell those grinches who believe they’re going to disrupt the parade that it is not going to happen,” Adams said Wednesday night.
The swift police action ensured the parade continued without further incident, with the balloon line leader re-energizing the crowd by announcing, “Ronald McDonald, everybody!”

The protest, which resulted in at least 21 arrests, reignited debates about the role of demonstrations at high-profile public events. Some applauded the NYPD for their quick response, while others viewed the crackdown as stifling free speech.
