Denmark experiences major cellphone disruption affecting emergency services

COPENHAGEN — A major disruption hit one of Denmark’s leading mobile networks on Thursday, resulting in significant challenges for residents trying to access emergency services. This incident led at least one hospital to scale back non-essential medical procedures and prompted local security forces in certain areas to patrol the streets to assist those in distress.

According to TDC Net, the network provider affected by the outage, the issues might stem from a recent update implemented within the last day. The company reassured the public that there was no evidence suggesting that the operational failures were caused by a cyber attack.

The impact of the outage extended beyond telecommunications, as train and bus services in various regions encountered delays attributed to signaling problems. Reports from Danish media described scenes of disorder at transportation stations, with passengers left stranded on trains.

Denmark’s Centre for Cyber Security, which is the nation’s primary IT security authority, along with a unit of the Danish Defense Intelligence Service, were unable to determine if the telecommunications problems and the transport disruptions were interconnected.

Later in the evening, TDC Net announced that they had implemented a remedy that restored the ability for customers to make calls, albeit with diminished sound quality. The company also advised individuals needing to reach emergency services via the 112 number to remove their SIM card before attempting to place a call.
