Cavaliers’ surprising 17-1 season opening highlights unexpected standout: bench guard Ty Jerome

CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers have been on an impressive run, boasting a home record of 10-0 and an astonishing overall record of 17-1. As fans filled Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, one enthusiastic supporter could be heard above the crowd chanting, “M-V-P! M-V-P!” However, the excitement wasn’t aimed at Donovan Mitchell, the five-time All-Star, but rather at his teammate, Ty Jerome, who was at the free-throw line at the time.

Jerome’s noteworthy performances have played a crucial role in Cleveland’s unexpected success this season. After enduring a severe ankle injury that limited him to just two games last year, he has now become a vital asset under the guidance of first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson.

Atkinson expressed his awe of Jerome, stating, “He’s in this zone,” referring to the player’s remarkable ability to elevate his game. This season, Jerome has shown consistent improvement, displaying an exceptional level of play over the past week. Notably, following a loss against Boston that ended their impressive 15-game winning streak, he scored a career-high 29 points, including seven 3-pointers during a victory against New Orleans. The very next game, he matched his friend Mitchell’s contributions with 26 points and six assists in a win over Toronto, inspiring the aforementioned MVP chant from the crowd that was once jokingly reserved for another player.

Jerome’s impact has been evident since the start of training camp, leaving a strong impression on Coach Atkinson. “Since the moment he stepped in our gym, he’s been phenomenal every day,” Atkinson noted, highlighting his expectations for Jerome’s contributions. Despite initial skepticism about how long Jerome’s success could last, his performance has been consistently outstanding, garnering credit for his impressive form.

The Cavaliers’ early season burst under Atkinson is turning heads across the league. The head coach, known for his dynamic coaching style, has transformed Cleveland into an offensive powerhouse, leading in numerous statistical categories—including points, field-goal percentage, 3-point shooting percentage, point differential, and offensive rating. His approach prioritizes swift ball movement and fundamental basketball, rendering the team difficult to defend against. “A chaotic environment with standard principles,” he described.

With Atkinson at the helm, the Cavs are maximizing the potential of their core players, which includes Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. This development contrasts with the previous challenges faced by former coach J.B. Bickerstaff regarding player growth and bench contributions. Jerome’s versatile skill set enables him to make pivotal plays on both ends of the court, and Atkinson often utilizes him defensively to disrupt opposing point guards.

Mitchell, who shares a longstanding friendship with Jerome, reflects on their past experiences, emphasizing Jerome’s growth and impact on the team. “Getting chewed out at 9 a.m. definitely is something that you don’t forget,” Mitchell joked about their childhood training sessions with Jerome’s father.

Mitchell also acknowledged the significance of Jerome’s comeback. “For him to return and not only be a solid player but also be dominant, it kind of gives us life,” he shared. “He’s just done so much for us on a nightly basis.”

While the Cavaliers may experience a downturn eventually, their current season has evolved into something extraordinary, far exceeding initial expectations.

“17-1,” Atkinson remarked, reflecting on his team’s surprising record. “It’s pretty shocking where we are… this league is difficult, and winning at this level doesn’t happen without hard work.” The surprising performance of both Jerome and the Cavs overall paints a promising picture as they continue their strong start this season.
