IA devastating listeria outbreak has claimed the life of an infant in California after the child consumed contaminated ready-to-eat meat.
This tragic death is among several linked to the foodborne bacterial illness, which ranks as the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the U.S.
Source of the Outbreak Identified
Investigations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other agencies have traced the outbreak to Yu Shang Food Inc.’s ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. Interviews with infected individuals and laboratory findings confirmed that the company’s products were responsible for the illnesses.
The CDC reports 11 people infected with the outbreak strain across four states, with nine requiring hospitalization. Though the implicated products have been recalled, some may still remain in consumer refrigerators or freezers, posing a continued risk.
Expanded Recall Includes Over 72,000 Pounds of Meat
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has expanded the recall to include 72,240 pounds of meat products. Recalled items include pork hock, chicken feet, pork feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork tongue. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for these products and dispose of them immediately.
Symptoms and Risks of Listeria Infection
Listeria infections can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear within two weeks of exposure but can range from the same day to as late as 10 weeks after consumption. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.
The CDC warns that listeria can survive refrigeration and easily spread to other foods and surfaces. To prevent infection, thoroughly clean refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products.
Impact on Victims and Legal Actions
Among those affected is Michael Silberman, 86, of Florida, who contracted listeria earlier this year, leading to severe brain swelling and prolonged seizures. Silberman, now reliant on a walker, is suing Boar’s Head, alleging that their sliced turkey, part of an earlier listeria recall, caused his illness. His case underscores the severe impact listeria can have on vulnerable individuals.
