Putin calls secret meeting after threatening UK with new missile: ‘We are ready for war’, says military chief

Russian President Vladimir Putin has escalated tensions with the West, calling a secret meeting after threatening the United Kingdom with a new hypersonic missile capable of devastating strikes. This alarming development comes as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine intensifies, raising fears of a broader confrontation.

UK Ready to Respond to Russian Aggression

Lieutenant General Rob Magowan told the House of Commons Defence Committee that Britain is prepared to respond to Russian aggression immediately. “If the British Army was asked to fight tonight, it would fight tonight,” he stated, emphasizing the UK’s readiness to counter any Russian strike on an Eastern European ally.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer sought to clarify Britain’s position, stating that the UK is not at war but remains resolute in its support for Ukraine. “We’re not at war, but Ukraine certainly is, because it has been invaded by Russia,” Starmer said. “We cannot allow Putin to win this war.”

Putin’s Hypersonic Missile Threat

In a televised address, Putin unveiled the “Oreshnik,” a hypersonic ballistic missile capable of traveling at ten times the speed of sound. The missile, reportedly tested on Ukrainian military targets, has a range of 5,000 kilometers, putting most of Europe and parts of the U.S. within reach. Putin claimed the weapon is unstoppable by current defenses.

Putin warned that Russia would target countries supplying Ukraine with long-range weapons, calling the conflict “global in nature.” He added ominously, “There are currently no means to counter such weapons. It is impossible.”

Escalation and Global Implications

As Ukraine faces a harsh winter, the stakes have risen dramatically. Russia’s strike on a Ukrainian defense enterprise marked the first use of the “Oreshnik” missile, signaling a new phase in the conflict. Ukrainian officials fear further attacks, with former generals warning that World War III has already begun.

Meanwhile, Western nations, including the UK and the U.S., have authorized Ukraine to use advanced weaponry, such as Storm Shadow and ATACMS missiles, to defend itself. This has further strained relations, with the Kremlin warning of “harsh retaliation.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “The Russian side has clearly demonstrated its capabilities. Further retaliatory actions will follow if our concerns are ignored.” He noted that Putin remains open to dialogue but accused the Biden administration of pursuing escalation.

A Grim Outlook for Europe and Beyond

The introduction of hypersonic weapons has heightened global fears. Experts warn that the conflict could spiral out of control, drawing NATO into direct confrontation with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the missile attacks as a dramatic escalation of Russia’s “brutality” and called for increased international support.

As the world watches, the situation remains precarious. Diplomatic efforts may yet provide a path to de-escalation, but the risk of a wider conflict continues to loom large.
