Tenor Jonas Kaufmann has announced the cancellation of his performance in the anticipated new production of Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino,” which is set to open the season at Milan’s prestigious Teatro alla Scala on December 7.
The 55-year-old singer will be succeeded by Brian Jagde, who will take on the role of Alvaro. The cast also features renowned soprano Anna Netrebko portraying Leonora and Ludovic Tézier playing Carlo.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kaufmann expressed his regret about the decision, citing family reasons as the motivation for his withdrawal. “I have already had the privilege of attending this extraordinary Italian cultural event several times, so I am all the more sorry to miss this special event, and to disappoint the audience and my colleagues this time,” he said. He further emphasized the significance of family, stating, “Nevertheless, I hope for your understanding — especially in a country where family is still very important.”
The date of December 7 coincides with a holiday in Milan that celebrates St. Ambrose, the patron saint of the city, and the opening night at La Scala is regarded as a highlight within the social calendar.
Despite this setback, Kaufmann is still set to perform alongside Netrebko at La Scala on November 29, participating in a pre-opening concert titled “Homage to Puccini,” which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the celebrated composer Giacomo Puccini’s passing.
