What Americans really think of Trump’s MAGA picks–and it is not RFK Jr. who is the least popular

President-elect Donald Trump has unveiled a controversial slate of Cabinet nominees, including several MAGA loyalists and hardline conservatives. While a new Echelon Insights poll shows mixed public opinion, many of the selections face significant hurdles in gaining Senate confirmation.

RFK Jr. and Elon Musk Among the Picks

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his controversial vaccine views, is nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Despite criticism from his own family, RFK Jr. holds a 46% favorability rating, narrowly surpassing his 41% unfavorability.
  • Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and X owner, is tapped to co-chair the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk supports using recess appointments to bypass Senate confirmations, emphasizing the need for swift government action.

Low Approval Ratings for Key Nominees

  • Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host with little large-scale management experience, is nominated for Secretary of Defense. He polls at just 21% approval, with 44% of respondents unfamiliar with him.
  • Matt Gaetz, the nominee for Attorney General, is the least favored pick. Gaetz, who left Congress amid allegations of misconduct, holds a 22% favorability rating, with 35% viewing him negatively.

Other Picks Draw Mixed Reactions

  • Marco Rubio, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, has the highest favorability among nominees, polling at 36%.
  • Tulsi Gabbard, selected for Director of National Intelligence, garners 25% approval, slightly edging her 23% disapproval.

Recess Appointments: Trump’s Strategy for Confirmation

With Senate confirmations posing a significant challenge, Trump is pressuring Senate Republicans to support recess appointments. This controversial move would allow nominees to bypass the Senate entirely, expediting their placement in key roles.

Outgoing Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell reportedly opposes this approach, fueling tension within the Republican Party. Incoming leader John Thune faces the task of navigating these contentious confirmations.

Public Opinion and Historical Challenges

While some nominees remain relatively unknown, their overall favorability could bolster Trump’s efforts during a fraught confirmation process. However, Trump faces an uphill battle, as his first term saw fewer nominees confirmed within 200 days compared to his predecessors.

With a Republican majority in Congress, Trump is poised to demand swift action, aiming to enact his agenda without delay. Whether these controversial picks will secure their roles remains to be seen, as the nation braces for what could be a politically turbulent start to the new administration.
