Two people were killed, and 10 others were wounded in two separate shootings along a New Orleans parade route on Sunday, disrupting a celebration attended by thousands. Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified suspects.

First Shooting: St. Roch Neighborhood

The first incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the St. Roch neighborhood, several blocks northeast of the French Quarter. Responding to reports of gunfire, officers found eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the New Orleans Police Department. All eight were transported to hospitals in unknown conditions, and a ninth victim later arrived at a hospital via a private vehicle.

Second Shooting: Almonaster Avenue Bridge

About 45 minutes later, police received reports of another shooting less than a mile away on the Almonaster Avenue Bridge. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim succumbed to injuries at the hospital. A third individual, transported privately to a hospital, was listed in stable condition. The bridge was closed in both directions as police investigated.

Unclear Connections Between Shootings

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated it was unclear if the two shootings were connected, noting the incidents involved “different kinds of approaches.” No suspect information has been released.

The shootings occurred during a “second line” celebration, a traditional event following a parade. Thousands had gathered for the annual outing of the Nine Times Social Aid & Pleasure Club in the city’s 9th Ward. Organizer Oscar Brown called the event a cherished tradition, while Kirkpatrick expressed hope for its continued success, saying, “It is a wonderful event, and we want to keep it a wonderful event.”

Ongoing Violence in the South

This tragedy marks the second major shooting in the South within days. On November 10, gunfire erupted during a homecoming weekend at Tuskegee University in Alabama, leaving one dead and 16 others injured, including 12 by gunfire.

As investigations continue, the New Orleans community is left grappling with the violence that marred an otherwise festive day.
