GREENSBORO, N.C. — UConn’s head coach Geno Auriemma achieved a remarkable milestone on Friday night, tying the NCAA Division I record for career victories in both men’s and women’s basketball. His No. 2 ranked Huskies secured a 69-58 victory over the No. 14 North Carolina team, marking Auriemma’s 1,216th win.

At 70 years old, Auriemma is in his 40th season coaching the Huskies. This milestone ties him with Tara VanDerveer of Stanford, who concluded her coaching career at the end of last season.

The opportunity for Auriemma to surpass this historic benchmark will arrive on Wednesday, when the Huskies host Fairleigh Dickinson. His impressive coaching record at UConn stands at 1,216 wins to just 162 losses, translating to an exceptional win percentage of 88.2%. Moreover, he has led the team to 11 NCAA championships, with the most recent triumph occurring in 2016.

Geno Auriemma now joins the ranks of elite coaches, alongside Mike Krzyzewski, who holds the record for men’s basketball with 1,202 victories amassed during his time at Army and Duke before retiring in 2022. Notably, Auriemma, VanDerveer, and Krzyzewski are the only coaches in NCAA Division I history to surpass the 1,200-win mark.
