A cruise ship successfully rescued four individuals from a malfunctioning catamaran that was taking on water in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 265 miles off the coast of Bermuda, as reported by officials on Sunday.
The 50-foot catamaran, known as Serenity, encountered serious issues when its escape hatch malfunctioned, allowing water to enter the vessel. According to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, the agency issued a distress call for assistance from nearby ships. Responding to the emergency was the Disney Treasure, a cruise ship located around 80 miles away, which promptly deployed a lifeboat to aid the four passengers on the Serenity.
Additionally, a team from the Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, dispatched an HC-130 aircraft to monitor the situation until the rescue was achieved. Footage captured by the Coast Guard showed the yellow lifeboat making its way from the Disney Treasure toward the compromised catamaran.
The Disney Treasure, which was making its way from Eemshaven in the Netherlands to its new port in Canaveral, Florida, acted quickly to assist the distressed vessel, according to a statement from Disney Cruise Line. Captain Marco Nogara expressed his satisfaction in being able to help those in danger, emphasizing the efficacy and training of the crew involved.
“Our team collaborated seamlessly during the rescue operation, showcasing their expertise and dedication to ensuring safety at sea,” Nogara remarked, highlighting the commitment of cruise staff during emergencies.
