Judith Jamison, a renowned dancer celebrated worldwide, has passed away at the age of 81. Her death occurred in New York on Saturday following a brief illness, with close friends by her side, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Christopher Zunner.
In a heartfelt tribute, Zunner expressed the profound impact that Jamison had on the world of dance, noting, “We remember and are grateful for her artistry, humanity, and incredible light, which inspired us all.”
Originally hailing from Philadelphia, Jamison began her journey in dance with a focus on ballet. She made her debut with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965, quickly rising to prominence as one of the company’s star performers. Jamison spent 15 years with the company, captivating audiences before taking on guest performances with various ballet troupes and showcasing her talents on Broadway, as detailed on the Ailey website.
