GREENVILLE, Miss. — Entergy Mississippi has officially launched the construction of a new power facility aimed at enhancing energy supply for approximately 385,000 homes throughout its 45-county service region.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Delta Blues Advanced Power Station took place in Greenville, Mississippi, marking a significant $1.2 billion investment that is projected to become operational by 2028, as announced by company representatives. Once fully functional, this power station is expected to offer the state a modern, cleaner, and more appealing energy source, which can be leveraged to attract new industries and job opportunities within Mississippi.
“Businesses today are seeking affordable, dependable, and clean energy sources, and we are demonstrating our capability to fulfill those demands,” stated Drew Marsh, the chair and CEO of Entergy. “The Delta Blues Advanced Power Station represents a new phase of energy generation in Mississippi, utilizing advanced technology to foster sustainability while keeping costs manageable for our customers.”
The upcoming facility will feature combined-cycle combustion turbine technology alongside dual-fuel capabilities. Although natural gas will serve as the primary fuel source, the plant will also be designed to incorporate blended hydrogen, enabling it to generate reliable energy while significantly lowering carbon emissions, according to the company.
Mississippi’s Governor Tate Reeves characterized the initiative as a “tremendous victory” for the city of Greenville, Washington County, and the wider state.
“Entergy has proven to be an outstanding partner in advancing our state’s economic growth. This new facility serves as an excellent representation of Mississippi’s dedication to delivering consistent, accessible, and cost-effective energy for our residents and businesses,” he remarked.
U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson highlighted the project as not just an investment in the energy future of Mississippi but also as a catalyst for economic growth across the Delta region.
“This endeavor signifies a dual commitment: to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions and to economic development that fosters job creation, invigorates local businesses, and enhances community well-being,” he stated. “By focusing on sustainable energy, we are ensuring our communities prosper and that the advantages of growth are shared by all.”
Alongside the groundbreaking, the company also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Gerald Andrus Steam Electric Station, which is slated for retirement upon the new plant’s launch.
“By transitioning from outdated gas generation methods to more efficient and cleaner alternatives, Entergy Mississippi is committed to providing its customers with modern, dependable energy well into the future,” the company affirmed.
Entergy Mississippi operates as a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation, based in New Orleans, which services approximately 3 million customers across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.
