A British-born New Yorker who says she became a U.S. citizen specifically to vote for Donald Trump made a bold statement at the polls last week by donning a designer-styled trash bag to protest President Biden’s recent remark referring to MAGA supporters as “garbage.”

Sophie Sassoon, a former fashion industry worker and proud MAGA supporter, wore a black trash bag cinched with a red Hermes belt, accessorized with a matching red Chanel bag and Louboutin heels. “I wanted to be a chic garbage bag – to show that this is what ‘garbage’ looks like,” she explained. Her statement garnered cheers, thumbs-up, and honks of approval from fellow New Yorkers.

A “Trashy” Fashion Statement

Sassoon’s eye-catching outfit, paired with a MAGA hat, turned heads and sparked conversation as she posed with supporters, including sanitation and construction workers, during her polling station visit on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “He’s one of the best presidents we ever had,” Sassoon said of Trump, expressing admiration for his policies on border security, inflation, and foreign relations.

Inspired to Become an American Citizen

Sassoon, who moved to New York 19 years ago, decided to become a U.S. citizen just before the 2016 election, inspired by Trump’s message. “I didn’t need to be a citizen, but there was an urgency to exercise my right as a voter for him,” she said.

Mixed Reactions at the Polls

Sassoon received mostly positive feedback at her polling place, with many passers-by thanking her for her bold stance. Only one poll worker seemed less than enthusiastic, quipping, “Oh, the garbage comment was days ago,” to which Sassoon replied, “Guess what? It still stinks.” One bystander, however, made a sarcastic remark about abortion rights, to which Sassoon responded, “That’s in the hands of the state, not the president.”

Lawyer Weighs In on Poll Worker’s Comment

An RNC-affiliated lawyer commented on the poll worker’s remark, calling it “very inappropriate,” adding that expressing personal views at a polling site is unacceptable.

Despite some criticism, Sassoon said the experience was overwhelmingly positive. “People thanked me for being brave,” she noted, undeterred by the controversy and proudly standing by her “trashy” couture protest.
