WEBBERVILLE, Mich. — A tragic accident late Saturday night on Interstate 96 near Webberville claimed the lives of four individuals and left 17 others injured after a semitruck collided with a line of vehicles that were at a standstill. The incident occurred as utility crews were completing work on power lines, temporarily halting traffic in the area.
According to authorities, around 11:45 p.m. a westbound semitruck failed to notice the congestion and crashed into the stationary cars. Officers from the Michigan State Police indicated that it appears the truck driver was unable to stop in time. “It seems the driver did not see the backup and could not prevent the collision,” they noted in a statement issued on the social media platform X.
The force of the crash resulted in multiple vehicles igniting, leading to a chaotic scene involving more than a dozen cars. Emergency responders confirmed the fatalities and reported that 17 injured individuals were transferred to local hospitals for treatment following the incident.
As of Sunday, Lt. Rene Gonzalez of the Michigan State Police stated there were no additional updates available regarding the situation. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing, with officials looking into the details leading up to this devastating event.
