Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum reported that the armed suspect used a handgun, shotgun, and rifle, leading officers to return fire. Both the suspect and one officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital. It’s unclear if either was hit by gunfire.

Police response and hotel lockdown

The incident began around 10 a.m. as police responded to a mental health emergency call regarding an altercation between the suspect and a hotel employee. When officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the man began firing. The suspect was also armed with knives and tossed one weapon from the balcony before eventually surrendering to a SWAT team.
