NEW YORK — Renowned NBC News journalist Andrea Mitchell announced on Tuesday her intention to conclude her weekday program on MSNBC following the inauguration of the next president. She will transition back into a reporting position.

At 77 years old, Mitchell has been the face of “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” which she has hosted since 2008, making her the longest-serving host in the network’s daytime lineup. Her career with NBC News spans back to 1978, during which time she has covered every significant political convention since 1980.

Despite stepping away from the anchor role, Mitchell will continue her contributions to NBC News and participate in major breaking news and political coverage.

“After 16 years of sitting in the anchor chair on a daily basis, I yearn for the opportunity to immerse myself in the aspects of journalism that I cherish most — such as connecting with people, listening to their stories, and reporting from the field. This is especially pertinent as the incoming president will face the enormous challenge of managing two international conflicts alongside the political polarization we see domestically,” she expressed during her program.

Mitchell will maintain her titles as NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent, ensuring her continued involvement in critical news reporting.
