PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Tuesday, Donald Trump described his rally held at Madison Square Garden in New York as a “lovefest,” despite the presence of crude and derogatory remarks made by various speakers during the event.
This term reflects Trump’s previous usage when referencing the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
While addressing attendees at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump emphasized that there had never been an event more beautiful than the rally he conducted in his hometown on Sunday night. This statement comes in the wake of substantial criticism from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign and many observers—both Democrats and Republicans—regarding the hateful comments that were directed at Latino, Black, Jewish, and Palestinian communities, alongside sexist jibes aimed at Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
One noteworthy incident was comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s performance, where he made a derogatory joke describing Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” This particular quip sparked notable outrage, especially due to the electoral significance of Puerto Rican voters residing in Pennsylvania and other critical swing states. In an unusual move, the Trump campaign distanced itself from Hinchcliffe’s remarks about Puerto Rico, although it did not take similar action regarding the other disparaging comments made during the rally.
