A wave of fury swept Puerto Rico on Monday after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe derided the island as “a floating island of garbage” during a packed Trump rally in New York. The comments, which targeted Puerto Rico and included offensive remarks about other minority groups, have ignited resentment across the U.S. territory, with residents voicing frustration over a long history of mistreatment.

Although Puerto Ricans on the island cannot vote in presidential elections, their influence remains strong through relatives on the mainland, particularly in swing states.

Phones buzzed across the island as relatives shared outrage over the insult, while Puerto Rican reggaeton star Bad Bunny quickly responded by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

Residents and Leaders Condemn Remarks

Locals expressed disbelief, recalling past moments of neglect, like Trump’s paper towel-throwing incident after Hurricane Maria. Jenniffer González, Puerto Rico’s representative in Congress and a Trump supporter, condemned the comments as “despicable and misguided.” Governor Pedro Pierluisi added that “garbage is what came out of Hinchcliffe’s mouth.”

Puerto Rican figures, including Ricky Martin, shared videos of the remarks, with captions like, “This is what they think of us.” Residents posted images of Puerto Rico’s turquoise waters, reminding others that they “live where you vacation” and take pride in their heritage, despite enduring persistent discrimination.

As election season intensifies, this incident may carry political consequences, as Puerto Rican communities in swing states weigh their influence on the upcoming presidential race.
