Elon Musk claims $2 trillion savings possible with new ‘Government Efficiency’ Department–but offers no details

At a Trump campaign rally in New York on Sunday, Elon Musk briefly took the stage, claiming he could save the U.S. $2 trillion by leading a new “Department of Government Efficiency.”

Musk’s comments were light on specifics, but he asserted that reducing waste in the “Harris-Biden” budget could drastically reduce taxpayer burden.

Musk was introduced by Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, who asked, “How much do you think we can cut from this wasted $6.5 trillion budget?” Musk replied, “At least $2 trillion,” emphasizing that all government spending ultimately taxes citizens, either directly or through inflation.

Musk’s idea aligns with Trump’s previous suggestion to appoint him to head a “DOGE” (Department of Government Efficiency) initiative. However, Musk did not detail specific policy changes or cuts he would implement if brought on in a second Trump administration.
