Over 41 million Americans have already cast their ballots ahead of the November 5 election. While early voting data can’t predict the outcome, it offers both Democrats and Republicans clues about turnout trends, writes Politico.

Early voters, who tend to be older and more engaged partisans, aren’t fully representative of the final electorate. This year’s early voting also differs from 2020 due to changes in voting laws and the pandemic’s influence.

Democrats Eye Strong Returns in Michigan

In Michigan, where a recent ballot measure expanded early voting, over 145,000 voters cast ballots on the first day of in-person early voting. Democrats see promise in high absentee ballot returns, especially in Detroit, where nearly two-thirds have been returned. Notably, 77% of absentee ballots from older Black voters, a key Democratic base, have already been returned.

Republicans Lead in Nevada’s Early Returns

Republicans have taken an early lead in Nevada, with nearly 31,000 more registered Republicans voting than Democrats. The GOP advantage is driven by strong turnout in rural areas and Clark County, home to Las Vegas. Despite Democrats leading in absentee ballot returns, Republicans are hopeful for gains among independent voters.

As both parties continue analyzing early voting data, the trends highlight competitive races in swing states like Michigan and Nevada, with turnout and voter enthusiasm potentially impacting results on Election Day.
