FORT WAYNE, Indiana — Investigators from the state are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate at an Indiana jail early Monday morning.
According to a release from the Indiana State Police, 25-year-old Jose Velazquez Trejo, a resident of Fort Wayne, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Allen County Jail just prior to 8 a.m. Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive him, but he was declared dead roughly 30 minutes later.
Reports indicate that Trejo had been experiencing withdrawal symptoms believed to be related to drug use prior to his arrest on Friday, which involved warrants from LaGrange and Noble counties. A nurse at the jail had checked on him about 40 minutes before he was found and was in the process of arranging for his transfer to a local hospital for further medical care, as noted by the state police.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday morning to help determine the exact cause of death.
