ALBANY, Ga. — A tragic incident occurred during homecoming weekend at Albany State University in Georgia, resulting in one death and five injuries from a shooting, as stated by a school administrator.
Interim President Lawrence M. Drake II reported that the gunfire erupted on Saturday night on the east campus of the university. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently overseeing the investigation into the shooting, according to local news sources.
In a statement released on Sunday, Drake emphasized the institution’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff at ASU, stating that it remains the top priority.
According to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, a 19-year-old male from Atlanta succumbed to his injuries at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. As of Sunday, efforts to verify the identity of the deceased individual were ongoing.
