Three dead and eight wounded in shooting after Mississippi high school football match

LEXINGTON, Miss. — Early Saturday morning in central Mississippi, a tragic incident unfolded, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to eight more when gunfire erupted among a group of young adults celebrating after a school’s homecoming football game. Authorities revealed that the violence followed a confrontation between two males, as reported by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting occurred approximately five miles outside of Lexington, situated more than 60 miles north of Jackson, and just after the homecoming festivities at Holmes County Consolidated School. Witnesses indicated that the joyous celebratory atmosphere took a devastating turn as people gathered on a trail following the game.

Among the deceased, two victims were aged 19, while the third was 25 years old. Those who sustained injuries were promptly airlifted to various local hospitals to receive medical attention for their wounds.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March remarked on the unfortunate turn of events, explaining that while many were in high spirits celebrating the football team’s victory, not everyone shared in that positive sentiment. The sheriff expressed his condolences and concern over the violent outbreak that marred a night intended for celebration.
