According to a report from the Labor Department released on Thursday, applications for unemployment benefits decreased by 19,000, bringing the total to 241,000 for the week ending October 12. This number significantly undercuts analysts’ expectations of 262,000.
Unemployment claims are generally seen as a reliable indicator of layoffs within the United States on a weekly basis. Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out fluctuations in the data, increased by 4,750 to reach 236,250.
Additionally, the overall number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits rose by 9,000, totaling approximately 1.87 million for the week of October 5.
