For the first time in 24 years, New York is buzzing with the possibility of another Subway Series. Both the Yankees and Mets have advanced to their respective league championship series, putting the city just two stops away from a historic World Series rematch.

The Yankees secured their place in the ALCS on Thursday night after defeating the Kansas City Royals. Meanwhile, the Mets punched their ticket a day earlier, eliminating the Philadelphia Phillies to reach the NLCS. With both teams now in baseball’s final four, they are only four wins away from a potential second Subway Series since 2000, when the Yankees triumphed over the Mets in five games.

Excitement Builds for a Potential Big Apple Clash

For Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo, the idea of a Subway Series has the city’s excitement at an all-time high. “It would be a blast,” Nimmo said, adding that such a matchup would be a dream scenario. The Mets will face the NL West champion Dodgers in the NLCS, while Aaron Judge and the Yankees await their ALCS opponent, either the Cleveland Guardians or Detroit Tigers.

The idea of daily playoff matchups in New York has fans and players eagerly anticipating the action. Should the NLCS go five games, both Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and Citi Field in Queens will host playoff games on consecutive days next week.

The Mets and Yankees have had stellar seasons, and both clubs have deep connections to the city. With local players like Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe and Mets reliever Adam Ottavino, the possibility of a cross-town World Series only adds to the magic of New York’s baseball culture. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who spent years with the Yankees, described the energy as “unbelievable” and called the scenario a “dream come true” for both fan bases.

While the Yankees are no strangers to the ALCS, making their 19th appearance, they have not captured a pennant since 2009. The Mets, on the other hand, are in the NLCS for the ninth time and are chasing their first World Series title since 1986.

Subway Series History and Rivalry

The rivalry between these two teams has a rich history, with the 2000 Subway Series standing as a pivotal moment in New York sports. The Yankees won that series in five games, with Derek Jeter taking MVP honors. The possibility of a second Subway Series has fans and players reminiscing about the old rivalry, with Judge commenting, “It’s going to be fun to look forward to down the road getting a chance to face them again.”

As both teams aim to capitalize on their high payrolls and strong rosters, New York could be on the verge of another unforgettable baseball moment. Should both teams make it to the World Series, the city is poised to once again witness a showdown for the ages.

For New York, a city steeped in baseball tradition, the anticipation of a Subway Series is building, and both teams are ready to write the next chapter in their storied rivalry.
