KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In an intense showdown on Saturday night, Dylan Sampson clinched No. 8 Tennessee’s 23-17 triumph over Florida with a decisive 1-yard touchdown run during overtime. This marked Sampson’s third touchdown of the contest, contributing significantly to the victory for the Volunteers, who now hold a record of 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference. The game reached overtime for Tennessee only for the second time in its history, with their previous OT appearance dating back to their national championship win in 1998.
Florida, which has a record of 3-3 and 1-2 in the SEC, struggled in their first overtime chance, as Trey Smack’s attempt at a 47-yard field goal failed on the initial possession.
The Gators managed to tie the game with just 29 seconds left, thanks to a 27-yard touchdown pass from DJ Lagway to Chimere Dike. As the Gators prepared to attempt a 2-point conversion, Tennessee opted for a timeout, resulting in Florida settling for an extra point instead.
Sampson was pivotal for the Volunteers, finishing with 112 rushing yards, including a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put Tennessee ahead. This decisive score was set up by a strong defensive effort that forced Florida to punt from their own end zone.
Florida initially took control of the game, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. Graham Mertz connected with Arlis Boardingham for a 13-yard touchdown mid-way through the third quarter before sustaining a left leg injury after his foot caught in the turf.
Following that, Sampson scored a 6-yard touchdown, and Lagway, who stepped in for Mertz, threw an interception that allowed Max Gilbert the opportunity to tie the game with a 35-yard field goal.
Looking ahead, Florida finds itself facing a challenging schedule, with upcoming games against Georgia, Texas, LSU, and Ole Miss. The Gators will need to quickly address their issues, especially after showing some fight with their recent victories against Mississippi State and UCF.
