Beginning with the Nobel Prize in Medicine, a week of award announcements commences.

The Nobel Prize announcements are set to begin with the Medicine Prize on Monday, as the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm gears up to unveil this year’s recipient.

Last year, the prestigious award in Physiology or Medicine was given to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their groundbreaking work in the development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19, which had a significant impact in combating the pandemic.

Throughout history, the Medicine Prize has been awarded 114 times to 227 individuals, known as laureates, with only 13 of them being women. The prize carries a financial reward of 11 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1 million, funded by Alfred Nobel’s estate, the Swedish inventor who established the prizes.

Recipients of the prize are invited to attend the award ceremonies on December 10, marking the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

Following the announcement of the Medicine Prize, the schedule proceeds with the Physics Prize on Tuesday, the Chemistry Prize on Wednesday, and the Literature Prize on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize winner will be revealed on Friday, while the Economics Prize announcement is scheduled for October 14.
