Hurricane Helene brought extensive destruction and loss of life across several states. The storm first made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend coast, bringing with it high winds and heavy rains. The storm surge inundated areas around Tampa Bay, forcing nine residents to drown after ignoring evacuation orders. In Georgia, over 20 people lost their lives, including a mother and her 1-month old twins. Atlanta recorded its heaviest 48-hour rainfall in history, leading to flooding and the rescuing of at least 20 individuals.

North Carolina experienced massive flooding and mudslides in the aftermath of Helene, with one heartbreaking story involving a family stranded on their rooftop in Asheville. Despite a desperate plea for help on social media, the family tragically drowned before rescue could arrive, leaving the community in mourning. South Carolina also faced significant devastation from falling trees caused by the storm, resulting in multiple fatalities, including two firefighters in Saluda County.

In Tennessee, the overflowing rivers prompted evacuation efforts as the rising waters threatened to breach dams. A hospital near the North Carolina border had to airlift patients and other individuals to safety as floodwaters rapidly engulfed the building. Despite the perilous conditions, all individuals were successfully evacuated with the assistance of helicopters. The widespread impact of Hurricane Helene serves as a stark reminder of nature’s power and the importance of preparedness in the face of such catastrophic events.
