Update: Tropical Storm Helene develops in the Caribbean as Tropical Storm John diminishes

Two significant weather systems are currently affecting Mexico’s southern Pacific coast and the Caribbean, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to both regions. Tropical Storm John hit Mexico late Monday, initially growing into a Category 3 hurricane before weakening back to a tropical storm early Tuesday. Despite the downgrade, the slow pace of the storm and heavy rainfall could lead to dangerous flash flooding and mudslides, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

In the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Helene emerged on Tuesday, impacting the Cayman Islands with heavy rains and large waves. Forecasters are warning that Helene could strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves towards the southeastern United States. Hurricane watches are in place for Florida’s Tampa Bay, certain parts of Mexico, and Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province.

Authorities in Mexico are offering free ferry services to evacuate tourists from the low-lying coastal island of Holbox, known for its serene waters and flamingos, due to the risk of flooding caused by the approaching storm. Florida A&M University has postponed an upcoming football game against Alabama A&M due to the threat posed by Helene.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 61 of the state’s 67 counties in anticipation of the storm’s impact, advising residents to prepare for potentially significant consequences. The storm, likely to be named Hurricane Helene, has the potential to bring strong winds and storm surges to a large area, with similarities to the destructive Hurricane Michael.

Former hurricane John claimed two lives on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, causing significant damage to homes and triggering mudslides. The storm weakened after making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane and was expected to further dissipate. Meanwhile, the Cayman Islands experienced heavy rainfall and waves as the storm that could soon develop into Tropical Storm Helene approaches the Caribbean and southeastern U.S. regions. Hurricane watches and warnings are in effect, advising residents to prepare for possible power outages and stockpile essential supplies.
